3 Aug - Canoe Trip, Pizza, Facetime, Map Update, Coins, Dixie the Pig and a Campfire

3 Aug
Today we took a break from the typical sightseeing.  Hammy had brought two kayaks and his canoe. He and Lorie used the kayaks, Doreen and I used his canoe, and Brad and Beth rented a canoe from the campground office for $5 for the entire day!   We headed down the Dead River to Androskoggin Lake.  It was several miles and took us about 1-1/2 hours each way.  It was very peaceful and very scenic.  Doreen was hoping to see a moose, but no such luck!  We did see some other wildlife and had a fantastic and relaxing day with our friends!

Reflection in the water.  Nice!

Awesome view!

After our canoe trip, we made dutch oven pizza and then we ventured up near the campground office where we could get WiFi signal and we used our iPad to "Facetime" with another one of our Air Force buddies that could not make it up here.  Greg Noskowiak and his wife Diane.  They are from Antigo Wisconsin.  Was really great to leverage technology so we could see and hear each other.  next best thing to being here!
Giving them a call!

Realizing our daughter Michelle, better known to the Maine-iacs as "Goober" , was born while we were at Loring AFB, her first couple years were spent with these guys!  They also came to des Moines and attended her wedding.  We had to give her a call and Facetime with her too!
Facetiming with Michelle around the campfire.  Notice the pontoon boat passing by in the background.

Great that everyone had a chance to talk with her.
Every time we enter a new state we update the map on the door of our RV.  We felt it was only fitting to involve the "Maine-iacs" in this ceremony.

Adding Maine!

Hammy and Lorie placing New Hampshire since we passed through it on the way to Maine.
We will catch Vermont after leaving Maine.  We will also catch Michigan on the way home.  New England - Check!
None of these guys other than Ernie and Rhonda Souther were able to attend my retirement ceremony last year, so I presented Hammy and Brad with my retirement coin and thanked them for their Air Force service and their everlasting friendship.  This is done with the coin in-hand and given in a handshake.

So there we were in the campground and pulling up next to us was a camper with a bunch of writing on the outside.  OK.  Well then out comes a pig!  Yep, we are talking the squealing kind with the curly tail and all!!  Well come to find out this gentleman travels the country promoting reading to primarily children but also elderly (he was not targeting us...Ha Ha) and as part of his presentation he uses a pot belly pig called Daisy, actually this is Daisy II.  Well, so I went over and introduced myself and asked if we could meet the pig.  Well, no problem but I must meet the pig up close and personal!!  Like I had to give the pig a little smootch!  of course the cameras were rolling and I knew this would be on Facebook within minutes!
Daisy's RV

The pot belly pigs are apparently very smart and easy to domesticate, including potty training.  This pig sleeps in their bed!

She knows I have a corn chip in my hand and she wants a smootch!
Now that is a face only a mother could love, and all she wants is just a little kissy-poo!
So giving the pig a "kiss" involves putting a tortilla chip in your mouth and he takes is from there.  You don't actually make mouth to snout contact, as it were, at least I did not!!

The evening came to a close at the campfire.  Of course they all thought it was hilarious the Chief had to lock lips with the swine!  So we told more and more stories and laughed until our sides hurt.  Words cannot describe how great it was to see these guys again.

2 Aug - Portland Maine: Cape Elizabeth Two Lights, Portland Head Light

2 Aug
Today Ernie and Rhonda Souther came down to the  campground and we car pooled to Portland ME. It was couple hour drive down there from the campgrounds.  The first stop was Cape Elizabeth Two Lights .  There are two "twin" lighthouses here, a beautiful view of the coast and a nice little restaurant.  Lighthouses up here are many times called "lights" or "headlights"
One of the two "twin" lights.

Facility that generates a fog horn sound.  Notice the huge "speaker" to the left of the building.

Amazing rocks on the shore.  They look like petrified wood that has been cut with a chain saw.  Incredible!

Ed, Doreen and Lorie checking out the rocks.

Good lookin' group!

Livin' the Dream!!
So after visiting the Two Lights, we had lunch there at a nice little restaurant.  I had to try the lobster rolls, of course!  That is a bun (roll) with lobster (salad) on it.  Very good!
Doreen and the lighthouse at the restaurant.  She thinks she wants one of these in here front yard at Norwalk!
After lunch we traveled to the Portland Head Light.  This is supposedly the "most photographed lighthouse in the United States.  Once we arrived, I can see why.

Incredible!

Breathtaking view of Portland Head Light
Ed and Doreen - continuing to "live the dream" :-)

Brad and Beth Herren

Armand "Hammy" and Lorie Lambert.

Ernie and Rhonda Souther

Doreen and her "boys" from Loring!

Loring boyz from 1974-1977.  Who would have thought we would have kept in touch for so many years and gotten back together here in 2016!  True friends.

Priceless selfie!
After visiting Portland Head Light we headed back to the campground and enjoyed an evening with a nice campfire on the banks of the Dead River.  Reminisce can't describe it!  Amazing the names and events that were recalled!  What a blast!  We literally laughed for hours!  Priceless!

1 Aug - Arrived at Riverbend Campground Leeds Maine

<disclaimer:  Poor internet coupled with time constraints has put us woefully behind in keeping the blog current.  So tonight I plan to "do an all-nighter" and get caught up.  This is actually being updated from our next destination - Timberland RV Park near Bar Harbor ME.  That's kind of like time travel I guess!  The Internet still sucks here but we will bite the proverbial bullet and eat the data charges on Verizon to get caught up.  After we pay our next cell phone bill we may need gas money to get home LOL!>
-------------------------------------------------
1 Aug
Today we departed Hanscom Air Force Base Fam Camp about 9:10 am and traveled to Riverbend Campground near Leeds Maine.  Weather was great.  We arrived about 12:45 having traveled about 165 miles.  The travel here was pretty uneventful and the roads were good.  That may seem like a long time to go 165 miles, but dragging our 15,000 lb "condominium on wheels" and needing to stop to "pee the puppy", it takes us a little longer.  Normal travel for us is 60 mph max.  The good news is it was interstate most of the way until we got within about 10 miles of the campgrounds, but the roads were still good and we had no issues. This is our 17th campground.

Doreen got a chuckle out of the signs in New Hampshire steering you off the interstate specifically to the liquor stores! Apparently they are state-run like Iowa used to be and quite a bit cheaper than those in neighboring states.  We did not stop...

This campground is located right on the banks of the Dead River which connects to the Androscoggin Lake.  Now the Dead River sounds a bit nasty, but it was really nice with hardly any current.  Great place for canoeing and kayaking.  Prior to our trip we had communicated with several other Air Force buddies who were unable to travel to northern Maine for the Loring Air Force Base reunion, but then they surprised  us when they said they would meet us here!!  We were the first to arrive and got out RV set up right away.  The campsite was very flat, but grass!  No gravel or pavement, just grass!  First time for that but it all worked out fine.  The spot was about 150 ft long and right by the river.  It worked out great.
From the road, looking towards our campsite.  The river would be in the back.  Notice our Nations Colors and the Air Force Flag flying high and proud!

River is to the right - blue tarp covers firewood.

A view from our fire ring area.  Beautiful!  Doreen expects a Moose to wander out on the far bank at any time.

Our fire ring, firewood and river in the background.  Talk about relaxing!!

Our little camper

So we spent the rest of the afternoon greeting our Air Force Buddies as they arrived.

Brad and Beth Herren's RV.  They are from Big Canoe GA.  Brad is a retired VP of Kimberly Clark.  He was stationed with us in Loring Maine back in 1974-1977.

Armand "Hammy" and Lorie Lambert's camper.  They are from Essex Junction VT.  Hammy got his nickname as he originally came from New Hampshire.

This is from one of our day trips but shows all the players.  L-R Hammy & Lorie Lambert; Ed and Doreen Schellhase; Brad and Beth Herren; Ernie and Rhonda Souther.  Ernie and Rhonda live just a few miles from here so they are not camping, but came down and facilitated some of our day trips and joined us in the evening camp fires.  Hammy, Brad, Ernie and I all worked at the same communications site near Loring Air Force base, Limestone Maine in the 1974-1977 timeframe.

31 July - Clean up, Pack up

31 July
Bugging out tomorrow. Maine, here we come!  Today we clean and prep for departure.  I replaced the water filter element last night.  Wow, it really works well catching the iron and other stuff in the various campgrounds water supply.
Left one is the old one.  Right one is what it looked like when installed in April!!
Next post will be from Maine.
