15 May - Camp Carlson Army Recreation Area near Ft Knox and Louisville Kentucky

15 May
Today we moved from Fort Campbell TN to Camp Carlson Army Recreation Area near Louisville KY.  We left about 8:10 am and arrived about 12:43 but that is Eastern time, so we were on the road 169 miles for about 3-1/2 hours including stops.  This is our sixth camping location on this trip. We will be here for 8 days.  (Click to enlarge)
We continue to be impressed with the military campgrounds.  This one is the best so far.  It is clean, very well maintained and quiet.  Here are some pictures:
Aerial view.  Our campsite is circles in red.  If you want a closer perspective, go to Google maps and search 37.902628, -086.024596

Our site
Setup done, relaxing with a cold one
Laundry facility, latrines, showers, and day room about 30 meters from our campsite
This laundry room looks brand new!  $1.00 to wash, $1.00 to dry, many machines
Doggie park across the street from our campsite.  Liberty loves being able to run free.  Separate areas for large dogs and small dogs
Many family cabins for rent and a huge lodge available for wedding receptions, etc
Doreen has identified several things to do here, especially being so close to Louisville:
- Monday - Hodgeville, Lincoln historical site.  Gen Patton museum and Ft Knox on the way back here.
- Tuesday - Louisville Slugger & Thomas Edison museum.  Glass blowing studio
- Wednesday / Bourbon tour near Shepardsville
- Churchill Downs & Kentucky Derby museum, etc
- Friday - Horse farm in Lagrange or Shelbyville
- Sat & Sun - open
- Mon - depart for Camp Atterbury IN

So a few thoughts about our trip so far:

Q - Is the trip what we expected it would be so far?
Ed - Yes.  No surprises so far.  pretty much as expected.  I could do a whole lot more of this.  Ask me again in September :-)
Doreen - Yes, exactly.  No problems, no hiccups yet.

Q - How is life in an RV?
Ed - As expected.  It is fun moving from place to place and seeing America.
Doreen - Feels like home.  The walls have not closed in on us at all.  Thinks the puppy is confused and does not know what is going on.

Q - How has the truck and RV handled the trip?
Ed - Great.  No issues with the truck but none expected.  The RV is doing better than expected.  A few minor tweeks but nothing major.  Leverlers are behaving themselves.  Of course they are.  We have not arrived at Jayco yet (scheduled for 31 May 0600 hrs) Ha! Ha!

Q - What is the best campground we have stayed so far?
Ed - This one.
Doreen - This one (Camp Carlson)

Q - The most fun you have had so far?
Ed - Scuba diving.  Trout fishing with "GI on the Fly" Paul Bobby and retired Command Chief Russ Brotsky!  I am still laughing!  What a blast!
Doreen - The Dutch oven class at White River State Park Campgrounds with Roxie Brotsky

Q - Disappointments?
Ed - None.  No issues.
Doreen - Weather.  Cooler and more rain than expected which makes for muddy camp sites.

Other comments:
Ed - I am thankful to have the opportunity to travel with great country with my spouse and see friends and relatives and interesting places and re-engage neglected passions such as fishing and scuba diving.  The historical stuff is fascinating.
Doreen - We are always finding a new adventure and things to see, that we had not scheduled or planned on.  I enjoy the military camp grounds security with BX (base/post exchange) and Commissary availability.
