Said goodbye to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base Ohio today at 08:04 am and arrived here at Fox Den Acres RV Park near New Stanton PA, our 11th campground, at 1:21pm. 266 miles, one of our longer days with 5 hrs 17 minutes travel time. Tried my darndest to leave my illness there too but not so lucky. It was smooth traveling, mostly all interstate with just a bit of construction. You can tell we have left the plains and started into the hills.
For all you statisticians out there, the following is provided:
4006 total miles traveled since 25 April (2110 miles point to point and 1896 vicinity miles)
-- Did not estimate that many vicinity miles into the budget
45 hrs 22 minutes travel time (point to point only)
$731.06 fuel purchases
329.16 gals diesel
$2.213 average price/gal
$1.969 lowest price at Saddlebrook MO
$2.699 highest price today at Pittsburgh PA
Fox Den Acres is apparently a very old campgrounds, but they have added a new. larger section of the "big rigs", which is where we were located. The older section is a very nice , heavily wooded campgrounds built for smaller campers. We picked this campgrounds due to it's proximity to Pittsburgh since attending a ballgame is one of our goals.
The newer section. No shade at all. |
Looking from the newer section into the entrance of the older section. Nice flag display with cannons at the entrance |
We spent the afternoon setting up and then headed for the pool. Yes, Doreen finally got wet. The pool is really nice with a slide for the kiddos. Water was very chilly so I stayed on shore. I did not figure the cold water would help my cold.
The cap cleaned up with auto soap, water and some elbow grease. |
Hitchhikers found in the bed of the truck |
Splat! |
Later in the evening we updated the map, filling in West Virginia and Pennsylvania! Very colorful!

Today we traveled to Pittsburgh and took the PNC Park tour, home of the Pittsburgh Pirates major league baseball team. It is about 55 minutes from our campgrounds, interstate /tollway the entire trip. The St Louis Cardinals are in town and we will see them play on Sunday the 12th. The downtown area was a mess. On one side of the river was a gay pride event and the other side the streets were blocked off due to a street race of some sort. Needless to say the big 'ol RAM dually is very hard to maneuver in the cities without all the barracades, detours and traffic. Today was a mess.... We attempted to scope out parking for the baseball game tomorrow, but the truck was too tall to fit in any of the parking garages. We finally found an outdoor lot for $9, on the east side of the river and then walked across the Andy Warhol bridge to PNC Park.

Our tour guides were very knowledgeable and kept us moving. One interesting fact was the origin of the name "Pirates". Prior to December 1891 they were named the Alleghenies. Apparently they signed second baseman Louis Bierbauer away from the Philadelphia Athletics after he was omitted from their roster. The Athletics accused the Alleghenies of stealing him, and the name "Pirates" was born.
The bullpen. I can almost see "The Hammer", Joel Hanrahan, warming up for a 9th inning save in here!! |
Bating cages under the stadium. Love the smell of pine tar! |
Kids, yes even the big league ball players hit off of tees! |

Tomorrow we will attend the 5:00 pm game St Louis cardinals at Pittsburgh Pirates. Monday, our last day here, we plan to visit Ligonier PA and Fort Ligonier, supposedly one of the finest examples of 18th century military engineering in the world.
Glad you are adding to the passport of ballparks. Interesting on the Pirate name and the history. I think that would be a ballpark to definitely see.
